Obituary

Sherrod Scott, 90 of Meadville, MS passed away Monday, April 29, 2024 at the Franklin Memorial Hospital in Meadville, MS. He was born Friday, June 30, 1933 in McCall Creek, Mississippi.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Meadville, MS. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Matt Blackwell will officiate with Franklin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Sherrod Scott was born June 30, 1933, to Thomas Jefferson Scott, Jr. and Lois Elizabeth Murray Scott. As a young boy, he and his brother, Dude, plowed the fields using their family mule, Pet. He also loved to sing publicly at an early age. As a young man, he sang in The Scott Quartet with his brother AJ, sister Winnie, friend Charles Hinson, and pianist Marie Hinson on a live radio broadcast out of Vidalia, LA. At age 18, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served for 25 years, first as Ship's Chaplain and later as a disciplinary officer at Pensacola NAS. LCDR Scott was stationed at Norfolk, VA, Pensacola, FL, Beaumont, TX, Charleston, SC, and Gulfport, MS. He was deployed in the Korean Conflict and to Sasebo, Japan, and later to Vietnam, then retired from the Navy in 1978 as a Lieutenant Commander.

During his years of military service, he also earned his Bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Southern Mississippi. After his Navy career, he worked for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspecting Company at Mississippi Tank Company in Hattiesburg, MS as an Inspecting Engineer for 15 years until he retired. While at USM he met his wife, LaFerrye Lynn. He and LaFerrye married in 1958 and had three children, Sherron Lynn, William Jordan, and Jacquelyn Jean. They have 7 grandchildren - Ben and Rebecca Stroud, Andrew, Matthew, Joseph, Daniel, and Elisabeth Scott.

Other than their home here in Mississippi, Sherrod and LaFerrye Lynn also had a home in Pensacola, FL – their favorite place the Navy sent them. They split their time between each home to spend time with both their Mississippi family and their lifelong Pensacola friends each year. They made many memories skiing, fishing, and boating in the Gulf of Mexico and always enjoyed entertaining guests and welcoming friends and family to their homes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, LaFerrye Lynn Ladner Scott of Meadville, MS; daughter, Sherron Lynn Scott; father, Thomas Jefferson Scott, Jr; mother, Louis Elizabeth Murray Scott; brothers, Ernest Frank Scott, Alex Jefferson Scott, John Richard Scott and Thomas Aaron Scott; sisters, Frances Christine Flowers, Rachel Buckles, Jeanette Smith, Aileen Scott.

Survivors include his daughter, Jackie Scott Stroud (Ken); sister, Leslie Willena Scott; granddaughter, Rebecca Stroud Arcelay (Kevin); grandson, Benjamin Stroud (Carrie Grace); brother-in-law, Ronny Ladner; sister-in-law, Eva Jean Ladner Bermon; ArtiLoy Scott; son, William J. Scott (Melinda); grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Joseph, Daniel, and Alysa Scott; and greatgrandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ben Stroud, Ronnie Smith, Lamar Scott, Gabe Scott, Johnny Scott, and William E Scott.

Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Scott, Leland Buckles, and Gene Buckles.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Children's Playground Fund.
