Irene Williams Smith was born on October 11, 1930 in Jefferson County, Mississippi to Ira and Jenny Williamson Williams. She was 93 years old when she passed on August 9, 2024.

Raised in Natchez along with her brother, Carroll, Irene met the love of her life, Williard Preston Smith, and they were married in June 21, 1947. The newlyweds moved to Jefferson County for Williard's work at the sawmill and she joined Greendale Methodist Church, where Williard was already a member.  They raised their two children, Wayne and Beverly, on their family land where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Nanny, as she was affectionately known by everyone, was famous for her large spreads of country cooking. She cooked a full course meal every day with vegetables that she grew in her garden.  It did not matter who was at her house, everyone sat down to supper together.  Her table was always full of good food, family, friends, and sometimes a random stranger who happened to be passing through. All were welcome at Nanny's table.

Nanny was also passionate about her community. She loved almost everyone. Her heart was so big and kind that she met every opportunity to serve with great tenacity and intention. She loved serving people and also keeping up with the latest activities with her friends.  She had a fun sense of humor, so there was always a group of people gathered around her.  If you wanted to know something, go sit by Nanny.

Nanny is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and daughter-in-law Sandra Smith.  Left to carry on her legacy is her immediate family: son Williard "Wayne" Smith and daughter Beverly Smith Stebbins; grandchildren: Steve Smith, Elliott (Sarah) Stebbins, Brady (Beth) Stebbins; great-grandchildren: Colton (Brandy), Samantha, and Tristan Smith, Emma Claire and Eli Stebbins, Bentley and Brooke Stebbins; Great-great Grandchildren:  Steven James and Caden Smith. Brother, Carroll (June) Williams, nephews: Kenny (Jenna) Williams, Michael (Vangi) Williams and niece: Michelle (Chris) Strong, along with a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends.

Services will be Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Greendale Church (11129 McNair Road NW, Roxie, MS).  Visitation will be 9:00AM until time of service at 11:00AM.  Graveside will be in the Greendale Cemetery immediately following the service. All are invited to stay for lunch with the family afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Irene Smith to Greendale Cemetery Association (101 Smith Rd, Roxie, MS 39661).
