Obituary

Harper L. Williams, 94, of Mobile, AL, passed from this life on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Providence Hospital in Mobile, AL. Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, in the Chapel at Franklin Funeral Home with graveside service to follow at Midway Cemetery. Bro. Lance Moak will officiate the services. Franklin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Williams was born February 14, 1920 in Meadville, MS, the eldest son of William Chamberlain and Florence Lillie Howell Williams. He graduated from Meadville High School in 1939, and then attended Southwest Junior College on a football scholarship. He served in the Mississippi National Guard, the US Army Air Corps and the Air Force for a total of 26 years. He saw combat action in the Pacific during WWII and the Korean War, and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He retired from the US Air Force in 1962 as a decorated Combat Veteran. He received the WWII Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal with cluster, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars (7 years of combat service). He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He was preceded in death by her parents, William Chamberlain and Florence Lillie Howell Williams; wife of 53 years, Katie Ruth Leonard Williams; and daughter, Sarah Ruth Williams.

Survivors are his son, David L. Williams and wife Suellen of Heathsville, VA; grandchrildren, Garrett L. Williams of Washington, DC, Stephanie Wood and husband Marcus of Greensboro, NC; great grandson, Elijah "Eli" Wood; and a host of relatives and friends.
