Obituary

Gary Wayne Hancock passed from this life on June 7th, 2024 at Kings Daughter Hospital in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Although Mr. Hancock never had children of his own he was widely known as 'Uncle Gary' to his community, friends, and family.  Uncle Gary was born at his home in Lucien, Mississippi on July 31, 1947.  He was the 5th child born to Mr. R.E. and Mrs. Ruthie Hancock.

Uncle Gary enjoyed learning about technology and passing his knowledge on to those around him.  He built home computers for his great nieces, nephews, and the children of his friends.  He made sure that they all had access to computers in their homes well before it was commonplace to have home computers.  He would load these computers with educational games for the children to enjoy.  One Christmas he purchased a virtual reality headset and took it with him to every holiday gathering. At this point in time, no one had ever seen something like this and everyone was excited to try it.  Seeing his loved ones so excited brought him so much joy.  He took his great nieces on several shopping trips and occasionally even let them drive his prized Cadillac.  Buying gifts for those that he loved brought great joy to Uncle Gary.  He had a knack for finding and purchasing the most unique and, at times, the most personal gifts.  He purchased a handmade chess board for two of his great nephews who are avid chess players.  He bought a telescope for some of the great nieces and nephews so that they could learn about our universe.  He also purchased his great nieces all tasers so that they could protect themselves when they were traveling.

Above all of this, nothing made Uncle Gary happier than the birth of a new baby in the family.  New babies always brought tears to his eyes and made him a little emotional.  He did everything he could to be present at the hospital for the birth so that he could be one of the first people to see the new baby.  If he was unable to be at the hospital, the new parents could expect a visit from him very soon after they arrived home from the hospital so that he could hold the baby and welcome them to the family.

One of Uncle Gary's favorite pastimes over the years has been to spend time at Granny's Corner.   The ladies at Granny's Corner always welcomed him with a good meal, smiles, and friendship.  They will miss him greatly.   His family wants to express their gratitude to Mrs. Sandra and her employees for taking such good care of Uncle Gary and providing him with food and friendship over the years.  He always treasured his time spent at the store with you all.

Uncle Gary is preceded in death by his parents, R.E. & Ruthie Hancock, his brother, Bobby Hancock, sister, Linda Jean Summers and Sister-In-Law Bernadine Hancock.  He is leaving behind his sister, Glenda June Bates (Verdale) and brother, Phil Hancock.  Also, left to remember Uncle Gary are a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, and even great-great nieces & nephews.  He also has many friends left on earth that will treasure his memory.  Uncle Gary also had two "adopted" nieces that he treated like his own nieces and their children like his great nieces & nephews.  These ladies along with their children will miss him immensely, Kipp Kimberly Ready (Jeff) and Lindie Rayborn, Trevor Freeman, Holden Miller, and Delanie Miller.

The family would like to thank the staff at Kings Daughter Medical Center in Brookhaven, Diversicare of Brookhaven, AccentCare of Natchez, and Arden Hospice for the kindness and compassionate care of their Uncle Gary.  They would also like to offer their greatest appreciation to Mrs. Sharon Jackson for taking care of him at home and for being such a good friend to him up until his death.

A memorial service for Uncle Gary will be scheduled for a later date.
